We are delighted to announce the successful launch of the 1st Assessment Report of the Knowledge Hub on Sea Level Rise, in the presence of co-chairs Nadia Pinardi and Bart van den Hurk. The launch webinar brought together all the lead authors who worked over the last two years on synthesizing the latest state of knowledge on SLR in Europe.
Almost 300 participants joined online to hear directly from the authors who collaborated to bring this vital report to life. Their dedication has been instrumental in providing European policymakers, researchers, and the public with a comprehensive overview of the challenges and implications of sea level rise across Europe.
The launch brought together diverse perspectives from speakers and facilitated a dynamic exchange with the audience. Participants actively engaged through insightful questions to the speakers, highlighting the strong interest in the topic.
The Lead Author of chapter ‘Adaptation measures and decision making principles’, Giulia Galluccio, is director at CMCC and vice-chair of JPI Climate. She said, “We developed a comprehensive catalogue of adaptation measures for costal planning, and we see that trade-offs are present. To accurately analyse existing trade-offs of adaptation measures, it is important to understand the effectiveness and feasibility of these measures. The paper has identified a critical gap in the literature in this regard. In particular, there is a scientific need to assess the effectiveness and feasibility of individual measures and in context-specific cases.”

Onward to COP29: Bringing the Assessment Report to the Global Stage
We’re thrilled to announce that the Assessment Report will also be highlighted at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where global climate leaders are converging to discuss pathways for climate adaptation and mitigation. If you are attending COP29, we invite you to join us at these events:
- November 20 in the Italian Pavilion
- November 21 in the German Pavilion
These will provide further opportunities to delve into the report’s findings and to discuss actionable steps to address the ongoing impacts of sea level rise across Europe and beyond.
