A new edition of the MAGICA Summer School returns on April 20-24, and applications are now open!
The course “Ocean Science in Practice for Coastal Ocean Data Analysis and Visualization,” organised by CMCC Foundation in the framework of MAGICA Project, will bring together students, graduates, young researchers and professionals from the ocean sciences field.
In this week-long, practice-oriented course, participants will have the opportunity to learn how Open Science concepts can be operationalized via cloud-native workflows tailored to their own research datasets. Throughout the course, participants will move from theoretical concepts, to essential data analysis and visualization technical tools, to practical case studies of implementation of Open Science workflows and FAIR principles in coastal ocean research projects.
The key learning outcome of the course will be the ability to implement Open Science and FAIRness best practices in participants’ own research activities. Through a blend of theory, case studies, testimonies and hands-on sessions, students will learn how to develop reproducible workflows for running numerical models, optimize and manage large-scale datasets following FAIR principles, and utilize open-source tools for transparent data analysis and visualization.
Faculty
The course is directed by Richard Signell, Founder of Open Science Computing, LLC, and Giulia Galluccio, Director of CMCC Foundation’s Advanced Training and Education Center (ATEC) and Vice-Chair of the Joint Programming Initiative Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe (JPI Climate).
Location
The Summer School will be hosted by the University Residential Center of Bertinoro (Ce.U.B.) in Bertinoro, Italy. Course activities will be held within the historical spaces of Bertinoro Fortress.
Scholarships
MAGICA aims to embody and promote equitable access to knowledge and is therefore committed to fostering inclusion and equal opportunities. Accordingly, MAGICA through the organizer CMCC Foundation will offer 20 scholarships for all 20 places available in the course.
Funding and organisers
The course is organised by the Future Earth Research School (FERS) of CMCC Foundation in the framework of MAGICA Project, in collaboration with CoastPredict, the Programme endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade affiliated with UNESCO-IOC’s Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS). FERS is coordinated by the Advanced Training and Education Center (ATEC) of CMCC Foundation.
